baptism, assembly,and the rest

i am currently watching part of the ELCA churchwide assembly online. i really don't know why i am watching it because it kind of angers me to see how badly our church handles issues- not even issues, but small technical items. currently they are discussin the renewing worship material- and the conversation has been so circular that i don't think any real points have been made. yet, i do believe that the people of god who are serving the church by being there will truly serve god and the church. i guess I am just frustrated how at times the entity gets in the way of the really important stuff- where is jesus in all of this? how are we serving our god now-what needs to be done in our churches to truly answer the call to serve, to love, and spread god grace?

on a better note, i have been asked to be part of a baptism service for a person interested in the new church. so, while i am very excited- this is the fun part of starting a new church!- i am very humbled as well. wow- what a great honor we pastors have to be part of such key and climatic parts of peoples lives. any suggestions as to where to begin my teaching of this awesome of baptism- i am meeting with the family tomorrow.

Right on...get in there and have some fun. RIght away I thought my advice would be to talk about the baptismal journey the individual will be starting on. As my cousin said, "You have found the path, so have a great journey." If we can emphasize the importance of this we have a solid church with people who live with a great foundation.

Hey, take every nightmare from a synod assembly and multiply it by, say, 65 and you have a lot of folks who simply like to hear themselves talk. I am watching for someone to come up to mike 11 and say, "does the Bishop have large talons?"

It is encouraging to be starting a call paralleled with others. This is really humbling stuff for me. Between weekly sermons, choosing confirmation curriculum, dealing with emergencies and putting together bulletins it can get to be all I thought it might be :)

Blessings my friend. Hey, when is that non-regional continuing education event coming up? ;)

i think all i will add here is...dive in and have a good time! enjoy the ride.

i just can't bring myself to listen to it if i don't have to be there. but, i wish there were some kind of "good stuff version" that i could read at the end of the day.

i'll probably watch tomorrow, though. i feel the need to know how it all transpires.

on the baptism thing, erik's doing his first one this weekend. it's pretty exciting! for those parts of the call, i can't wait!
